OWN has released an extended trailer to its new original one-hour romantic drama from award-winning producers Mara Brock Akil<\/strong> (\u201cBeing Mary Jane,\u201d \u201cThe Game,\u201d \u201cGirlfriends\u201d) and Salim Akil<\/strong> (\u201cBlack Lightning\u201d) will premiere on Tuesday, June 19 at 10 p.m. ET\/PT<\/strong> (after Tyler Perry\u2019s \u201cThe Haves and the Have Nots at 9 p.m. ET\/PT). Brock Akil serves as showrunner on the series, which she and Akil created and executive produce through their company Akil Productions, in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television.<\/p>\n

Set primarily in 1990\u2019s Los Angeles against the backdrop of Black Hollywood, \u201cLove Is__\u201d<\/strong> follows Nuri (Michele Weaver<\/strong>) and Yasir (Will Catlett<\/strong>), a couple from seemingly opposite worlds, as they chase their dreams and learn to follow their hearts. Told from the perspective of the couple\u2019s present-day selves, the romantic drama also revisits the social issues and vibrant black culture of that time reflecting on how it all aligned to shape the couple they have become nearly 20 years later — a power couple navigating a complex set of social codes while also balancing successful careers and a beautiful family. Drawing inspiration from creators Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil\u2019s own relationship journey, the series explores the highs, the lows, and the magic of falling (and staying) in love.<\/p>\n

The cast includes series regulars Michele Weaver<\/strong> (\u201cIllicit\u201d) as \u2018Nuri,\u2019 a bubbly personality with big dreams who is struggling to make a name for herself as a sitcom staff writer while juggling an assortment of romances that only leave her partly fulfilled; Will Catlett (<\/strong>\u201cBlack Lightning\u201d) as \u2018Yasir,\u2019 an aspiring writer\/director who is down to his last two unemployment checks and lives (unhappily) with his on-and-off again ex \u2018Ruby,\u2019 played by Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing<\/strong> (\u201cAlles Voor Elkaar\u201d).<\/p>\n

Tyrone Marshall Brown<\/strong> (\u201cBull\u201d) portrays \u2018Sean,\u2019 Yasir\u2019s opinionated friend who possesses great taste and is full of ideas but lacks follow through; and Idara Victor<\/strong> (\u201cMad Men\u201d) stars as \u2018Angela,\u2019 a member of the same writing staff with Nuri who doesn\u2019t always agree with everything Nuri says, mainly because she is a disgruntled drama writer stuck in a comedy she doesn\u2019t believe in. TV veteran Kadeem Hardison<\/strong> (\u201cA Different World\u201d) is \u2018Norman,\u2019 the executive producer of the hit sit-com \u201cMarvin\u201d and tough boss of Nuri and Angela who is hard to impress and even harder to amuse; Clarke Peters<\/strong> (\u201cThe Wire\u201d) portrays present day \u2018Wiser Yasir,\u2019 handsome, still-confident and Nuri\u2019s husband of many years; and Wendy Davis<\/strong> (\u201cArmy Wives\u201d) is \u2018Wiser Nuri,\u2019 who is a more relaxed, happy, and comfortable version of herself both in life and in her marriage to Yasir.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove Is___\u201d also features Primetime Emmy\u00ae-winner Loretta Devine<\/strong> (\u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d), NAACP Image Award-nominee Vanessa Bell Calloway<\/strong> (\u201cComing to America\u201d), NAACP Image Award-winner Tim Reid<\/strong> (\u201cSister, Sister\u201d), Tosin Morohunfola<\/strong> (\u201cThe Chi\u201d), Tammy Townsend<\/strong> (\u201cSherri\u201d), and Michael King<\/strong> (\u201cBlack Lightning\u201d), all with recurring roles.<\/p>\n
