The 78th Golden Globe Awards went virtual this year and were filmed from Los Angeles and New York City. Nominees joined in remotely, and the limited audience consisted of front-line and essential workers. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the event and delivered funny yet honest monologues that called out the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Out of 87 members, there are no black journalists.

Controversy aside, last night’s award show was a HUGE win for Black actors. Four Black actors took home Golden Globes, with three awarded in the film category for the first time in 14 years!

Daniel Kaluuya received the first win of the night for supporting film actor in “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

John Boyega won for supporting TV actor in “Small Axe”.

The late Chadwick Boseman was awarded best actor in a drama for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, becoming the first posthumous winner in the category’s history. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman gave an emotional acceptance speech on his behalf.

Andra Day became the second Black woman to win the Golden Globe award for lead actress in a drama film for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”. (The first Black woman to win the award was Whoopi Goldberg in 1986.)

‘Soul’ co-director Kemp Powers took home the win for best animated feature making him the first debut Black filmmaker to win a Golden Globe in that category. He is also the second Black director to win in this category following Peter Ramsey, for 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

John Batiste

In addition to taking home the win for “Best Motion Picture – Animated”, Disney/Pixar’s Soul score—composed by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and John Batiste—won in the “Best Original Score” category. The score for Soul has both a dramatic score and a jazz score. The dramatic section was written by Reznor and Ross and the jazz score was written by Batiste.
