blackfilm.com correspondent Ellen Wanjiru speaks with co-directors Kelley Kali and Angelique Molina, about their indie film I’m Fine (Thanks For Asking), one of the first selects for this year’s SXSW 2021 Film Festival running from March 16-20th for narrative feature competition as well as its world premiere.
Storyline – When a recently widowed mother becomes houseless, she convinces her 8-year-old daughter that they are only camping for fun while working to get them off the streets.

Kelley Kali, a Howard University & USC School of Cinematic Arts Alumna, has directed, written, and produced award-winning films in Belize, Haiti, China, and locally in the USA. She was selected to work with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s New Form Digital, to develop her web series, The Discovery of Dit Dodson, that went on to compete in top tier festivals across the nation. Recently Kelley wrote and directed, Lalo’s House (executive produced by Garcelle Beauvais and Lisa L. Wilson), which went on to win the 45th Annual Student Academy Award and was in consideration for the 91st Annual Academy Awards. Kelley also won the Directors Guild of America Student Filmmaker Award, the KCET Fine Cut Award, the Shadow and Act Rising Award, the Programmers’ Award at the Oscar-qualifying Pan African Film Festival, the Jury Award at the Diversity in Cannes Showcase sponsored by Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions, and many more. Her work has been featured at the American Black Film Festival in the Emerging Directors and Telluride Film Festival.

Angelique Molina is a USC School of Cinematic Arts Alumna and Los Angeles based filmmaker. Inspired by visual storytelling, she is pursuing a career in film and television as a Director and Cinematographer. She served as the cinematographer for Amelia’s Closet, a short film that won the HBO Best Short Award at the American Black Film Festival, and was a finalist at the 43rd Student Academy awards. In 2017, she directed the documentary short There Goes the Neighborhood, which was accepted into the Los Angeles Film Festival and received the Best Documentary Short Award at USC’s First Look Film Festival. Since graduating from her alma mater, Angelique has been busy at work in the television world, working on hit and critically acclaimed shows such as Grown-ish, Will and Grace, #Blackaf, Live in Front of a Studio Audience and Young Sheldon. Recently, she has been field producing for two unreleased Netflix shows, and was an Associate Producer for an upcoming Boardwalk Pictures documentary feature film.
