Last night, Blackfilm.com attended The Weinstein Company screening of The Sapphires at the Paris Theater in New York.
Among the cast in attendance were director Wayne Blair, cast members Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell, screenwriter Tony Briggs, and his mother Laurel Robinson, who was one the original Sapphires.
Inspired by a true story, “The Sapphires” follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group The Sapphires entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia (Tapsell), Gail (Mailman), Julie (Mauboy) and Kay (Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (O’Dowd), a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.
The film, which won 11 AACTA Awards (the Australian Oscars), including best film, best director and best supporting actress for Jessica Mauboy, opens in limited theaters on March 22.
After the screening, the afterparty was held at Hudson Common at Hudson Hotel, where Maubon, a singer and runner-up in the 2006 Australian Idol, got on stage and belted a few Motown songs before bringing the her cast, including Chris O’ Dowd, for a few numbers.
