Marvel says no plans for War Machine and Falcon standalone seriesPosted by Wilson Morales

With the current crop of Black actors (Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Idris Elba, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, and Anthony Mackie) in today’s superhero films ranging from The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, one wonders if there will ever be a standalone Black superhero film.
It was always assumed when Terrence Howard first played James Rhodes in the first Iron Man film, that eventually at some point, a spinoff would emerge with War Machine at the helm. As Cheadle took over the role in Iron Man 2 and finally donned on the War Machine suit, the possibility of the standalone film grew higher. As it is now, with Iron Man 3 recently out and getting closer to making a billion dollars, one would think a spinoff can be done, but Fiege put a stop to that talk.
Our colleagues at Collider.com recently spoke with Marvel Studios bigwig Kevin Feige and he basically stated that, while Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) continues to appear in a number of their films, there are currently no plans to make spin-off films for the characters War Machine (played by Don Cheadle) from the Iron Man films or The Falcon (Anthony Mackie in the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
Although Mackie is currently shooting his role as Falcon, most people didn’t think the role was big enough to generate a standalone series.
Marvel did talk to The Hollywood Reporter and stated that they do, with no set date, have plans to make a Black Panther film. With Morris Chestnut and 42’s Chad Boseman being looked at to play the role, there’s a possibility that at least this film will done. The question is when and how does it fit in the Marvel plans. By the time, they get around to production, the names that being tossed around may be a little older or unmarketable to play the role.
It was also stated that a reboot of the character Blade (whose screenrights were recently returned to Marvel) was also in the cards. Guess that means the recently-released-from-prison Wesley Snipes, who played the role for three films, will be not involved in the new phase and that the role could be filled by another young Black actor.
