Actress and Grammy nominated recording artist Antonique Smith has joined the cast of the upcoming FOX police brutality series, “Shots Fired”.
The Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewoood penned and Brian Grazer produced “event series” is inspired by recent events that have sparked national outrage and the Black Lives Matters movement.
Shots Fired stars Sanaa Lathan as Ashe Bell, an expert investigator who examines the dangerous aftermath of the racially-charged shootings in a small town in North Carolina, alongside Preston Terry (Race’s Stephan James), a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice. The pair must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such volatile cases, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts.
Also included in the cast are Helen Hunt, Richard Dreyfus, Stephen Moyer, DeWanda Wise, Tristan (aka Mack) Wilds and Aisha Hinds.
Smith will have a recurring role as a potential key witness to a murder in the town.
Best known for her starring role as Faith Evans in the blockbuster film, Notorious, as well as her leading role in the Broadway musical, RENT, Smith was nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category. Her previous acting credits include Yelling to the Sky, Abduction, and TV One’s original film, Stock Option. The New Jersey native will next be seen in the upcoming Queen Latifah executive produced film, Deuces.
In honor of Earth Month, on Friday, April 29th, 2016, Antonique Smith in concert with People’s Climate Music will be releasing her latest music video for the moving power ballad, “All We Really Have Is Now” from her debut EP, “Love Is Everything”.
Shots Fired is produced by Undisputed Cinema and Imagine Television, in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series is co-written by Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. The project is executive-produced by Gina Prince-Bythewood, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct.
