According to TVLine, actress Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of Fox and Lee Daniels’ drama Empire, where she will play Renee, the estranged mother of Cookie Lyon (played by Taraji P. Henson).
According to the site, Woodard, a four-time Emmy winner, will appear on a recurring basis during the second half of Empire‘s current fourth season, which resumes on Wednesday, March 28 at 8/7c.
In the midseason finale, Lucious (Terrence Howard) had been drugged and kidnapped by Claudia (Demi Moore). Fox is teasing that Woodard’s character Renee “comes back into her [daughter’s] life with a turbulent reunion.”
The gig marks a reunion for the two Oscar-nominated powerhouses: They co-starred together in the 2008 pic Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys.
Woodard’s recent TV credits include series-regular stints on Netflix’s Luke Cage (which is returning for Season 2) and A Series of Unfortunate Events.
