Always Bet on Black

If we were gamblers, we would put our money on Eddie Murphy to win a 77th Golden Globe Award. We credit Murphy for multiple talents but by far, his best talent is the talent of reinvention. After a self-imposed hibernation, Murphy makes a comeback, yet again, as the lead in the dramatic story, Netflix’ “Dolemite Is My Name. No one does a comeback like Murphy and he does it so well that he’s been predicted as favorite for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Murphy has always been able to transform himself, fully immersing into his multiple characters. Rudy Ray Moore’s life portrayal in Dolemite Is My Name is another man that Murphy was able to embody and it was one of his most raw and unfiltered portrayals.

Even industry critics agree with our bet; Insider believes “…with the movie being a comeback of sorts for him (Eddie Murphy), I think a larger number of voters will go with him,” says Jason Guerrasio and Kirsten Acuna for Insider.com. According to the website Sports Betting Dime, Eddie Murphy’s odds are set at a whopping -200!; which is the current strong favorite to win the award. Entertainment Tonight gives credit to one of Murphy’s competitors (DiCaprio) but understands the importance of reinvention. “DiCaprio may be the obvious choice here, but we’re leaning toward Murphy. This sort of comeback performance proves pretty irresistible, and the Globes could claim his first acceptance speech back, which would be quite the must-watch moment,” says John Boone‍ and Philiana Ng‍ of ETOnline.com.

Other 2020 Golden Globe Black nominees include Cynthia Erivo, Best Actress in a Drama for her portrayal in “Harriet,” and, of course, “The Lion King” is nominated for Best Animation motion picture and Billy Porter is nominated for Best Actor in a Television series – Musical or Comedy category. Porter has been on a roll for his portrayal of Pray Tell in FXs Pose, bringing home an Emmy award, making history as the first openly gay winner in its televised history. Our prediction will be that Porter will again make history, if not as an award winner than as a fashion statement.

Last year’s award season will be hard to top with the triumphant wins of “Black Panther,” and “If Beale Street Could Talk”; 2020 promises to be a richly diverse award season instead celebrating true stories of our black heroes and saviors. We’re betting on black.
