Captain Phillips - Barkhad Abdi 3

Barkhad Abdi, who received an Academy Award nomination for his role opposite Tom Hanks in ‘Captain Phillips,’ has joined the cast of a ‘Blade Runner’ sequel, with Harrison Ford reprising his famous role as Rick Deckard.

He joins a cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri and Dave Bautista. Denis Villeneuve is directing the Blade Runner sequel, which reunites Villeneuve with multi-Oscar nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins (Sicario, Prisoners).

The Blade Runner sequel is set several decades after the 1982 original. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Abdi was recently seen opposite Helen Mirren and the late Alan Rickman in Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky. He also appeared with Mark Strong and Sacha Baron Cohen in The Brother Grimsby.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin July 2016. The film will be released by Warner Bros. in North America and Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute in all media for all overseas territories.
