Oscar winner, filmmaker Barry Jenkins and his Pastel production company has inked a two-year, first-look TV deal with HBO and its streaming sister HBO Max. Pastel aims to serve as an incubator and development support system for budding artists taking on challenging and ground-breaking works; a successful filmmaking collective founded by Barry Jenkins and The Underground Railroad producers Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak. This deal comes after Jenkins and Pastel previously had a first-look deal, signed in 2018, with Amazon.

Jenkins is best known for critically-acclaimed and award-winning movies ‘Moonlight’ and ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’, both produced by Pastel. The collective collaborated with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment for Amazon’s limited series ‘The Underground Railroad’, which Jenkins has directed. Plan B Entertainment also worked with Jenkins on the Oscar winning film “If Beale Street Could Talk,” starring Oscar winner, Regina King, who made her directorial debut this year with “One Night in Miami.”

The Underground Railroad cast will be led by Thuso Mbedu as Cora, with Aaron Pierre as Caesar, and Chase W. Dillon as Homer.  Based on the Colson Whitehead book, The Underground Railroad chronicles young Cora’s journey as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. After escaping her Georgia plantation for the rumored Underground Railroad, Cora discovers no mere metaphor, but an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. The 10-episode series, based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video this May.
