Curtiss Cook Talks ‘The Chi’ & Upcoming Film ‘Westside Story’

Blackfilm.com correspondent Ellen J. Wanjiru speaks with film, television, and Broadway star Curtiss Cook about his infamous role as ‘Douda’ in Showtime’s “The Chi,” who he draws from to bring that character to life, and his upcoming anticipated film Westside Story, directed by Steven Spielberg.

THE CHI is an American drama series about life in a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The dramatic series centers on a group of Chicago residents, who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption. Curtiss stars in the career defining role as ‘Douda,’ who is a successful Southside businessman, and now mayor after besting Lena Waithe’s character ‘Camille Hallaway’ at the end of the last season. Now as acting mayor in the new season, ‘Douda’ is faced with the challenge of letting go of his gangster past to embrace is political future, but will his past let go of him? This season also tackles the on-going injustice treatment of the African-American community by police offers.

Curtiss Cook will next be seen in the WEST SIDE STORY as ‘Abe,’ a mysterious NYC man who has his hands in everything happening in the streets. The Steven Spielberg lead film will be released on December 10, 2021. West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Other cast members in the star-studded film include Ansel Elgort, Rita Moreno, Maddie Ziegler, and Corey Stoll, to name a few. Watch teaser trailer HERE!
