Are you familiar with the Ross Ulbricht story?
Ross Ulbricht is the creator of SILK ROAD, which was an online black market, also known as the Amazon of the dark web. Users were able to browse anonymously and securely without traffic monitoring. It became a hub to buy and sell illicit drugs, weapons, poison, and services (including hacking and even murder-for-hire). SILK ROAD did not accept cash or credit cards. Users had to pay with bitcoin a cryptocurrency. All transactions were encrypted and hence untraceable.
Today, Ross Ulbricht is serving life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He was recently in the news as Trump was considering pardoning him prior to the end of his term. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2020/12/the-double-standard-of-a-trump-pardon-for-silk-road-founder-ross-ulbricht
