According to TVLine, two-time Oscar winner and Tony Award winner Denzel Washington will direct an upcoming episode of ABC’s long-running Shonda Rhimes series Grey Anatomy.
Washington will direct this season’s ninth episode that will shoot later this month. The series is now in its 12 season.
This marks the first time that Washington, who made his directorial debut with Antwone Fisher in 2002, followed by The Great Debaters in 2007, has directed for the small screen.
Should Washington decide to also act in the episode, he would be returning to a familiar position. From 1982 to 1988, he played Dr. Phillip Chandler in NBC’s television hospital drama St. Elsewhere, and was one of only a few African-American actors to appear on the series for its entire six-year run.
Most recently, he announced that he will direct and exec produce all 10 of August Wilson’s plays for HBO over the next decade.
“I’m directing, producing — and acting in one (Fences) — and I’m executive producing the other nine,” he told “The Notorious Ph. D” Todd Boyd during “An Evening With Denzel Washington” at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. “I’m really excited about that — that [the estate] would put that in my hands and trust me,” Washington said tonight. “That’s good enough for me. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
