Coming out on August 17th is the heavily anticipated musical film, Sparkle, which stars Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick, Cee-Lo Green, Tamela Mann, and Michael Beach.

A remake of the 1976 urban classic, “Sparkle” tells the story of the title character; Sparkle, (Jordin Sparks) the youngest of three sisters and a music prodigy who struggles to becomes a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. Sparkle is from an affluent Detroit area, naive to the unexpected experiences her new life will bring as she and her two sisters blossom into a dynamic singing group during the Motown-era.

For Derek Luke, who plays Stix, the New Jersey native is paired with Sparks, another Jersey native. After being in Antwone Fisher, Biker Boyz, Friday Night Lights, Catch a Fire, Miracle at St. Anna, Madea Goes to Jail, Captain America: The First Avenger, and most recently Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Sparkle is his second musical film. He played Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs in the rap film, Notorious.

Luke spoke to Blackfilm.com about his role in Sparkle, working with Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks, and his upcoming roles and projects.
