Something back in early December of ’13, when the weather was brink on the east coast, it was a bit comforting for Blackfilm.com to go down to Clearwater, Florida to visit the set of Dolphin Tale 2, the sequel to the 2011 Warner Bros. that grossed nearly $100M.
At the heart of the original family drama was Winter, the dolphin whose true story of losing its tail was brought to the big screen by Alcon Entertainment. Through the efforts of Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble), his mom Lorraine (Ashely Judd), his cousin Kyle (Austin Stowell), his grandfather Reed (Kris Kristofferson), prosthetic specialist Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman), Hazel Haskett (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) and her dad, Clay (Harry Connick Jr.), who runs the animal hospital, Winter is able to get back in the water with a special artificial tail.
This time around, there’s another dolphin, baby Hope, in need of McCarthy’s help. The whole gang, including Winter, is back along with swimmer Bethany Hamilton, whose own story of losing an arm (shark bite) was told in ‘Soul Surfer.’ Charles Martin Smith also returns as writer and director.
During our visit to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, we got to meet and speak with Director of Clearwater Marine Aquarium David Yates, producer Andrew Kosove, co-CEO and co-founder of Alcon Entertainment, Nathan Gamble, Harry Connick Jr., Morgan Freeman, Austin Highsmith, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, Austin Stowell, and Bethany Hamilton.
Visiting a set can be grueling depending where you are at and how long you are there. Most times, you’re just watching one scene being shot over and over until there’s break where the talent can come over and speak with you, but when you’re in Florida where the sun is out and you’ve never seen a dolphin close-up, the wait is worth it.
With the film opening later this year on September 19, there’s plenty of time in between before we can share our experience from the set and talking with the talent mentioned above. In the meantime, here are a few pics from the upcoming release.
