Dominique Fishback Talks ‘The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey’

Blackfilm.com correspondent Ellen J. Wanjiru chats with Dominique Fishback about stepping into her character “Robyn,” working alongside Samuel L. Jackson and improvising to make her character more authentic, in the Apple TV+ limited series “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.” Premiering Friday, March 11, 2022.

“The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey” stars Samuel L. Jackson as Ptolemy Grey, an ailing man forgotten by his family, his friends, and by even himself. Suddenly left without his trusted caretaker and on the brink of sinking even deeper into a lonely dementia, Ptolemy is assigned to the care of orphaned teenager, Robyn. When they learn about a treatment that can temporarily restore Ptolemy’s dementia-addled memories, it begins a journey toward shocking truths about the past, present and future.

Also starring Cynthia Kaye McWilliams as ‘Sensia,’ Damon Gupton as ‘Coydog,’ Marsha Stephanie Blake as ‘Niecie,’ Walton Goggins as ‘Dr. Rubin,’ Omar Benson Miller as ‘Reggie.’

Dominique Fishback is a multi-hyphenate talent whose work has established her as an award-nominated actress, a spoken word poet and writer on the rise.

Fishback was recently seen starring in the Academy Award-nominated film “Judas and the Black Messiah,” alongside Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield, directed and co-written by Shaka King. She was nominated for a 2021 BAFTA Award for her performance. Fishback will soon begin production as the co-lead on the next film in the blockbuster franchise, “Transformers.” She will star alongside Anthony Ramos in Steven Caple Jr.’s film.

In April 2021, it was announced that Fishback had partnered with Oscar winner Jamie Foxx to adapt her one woman show, “Subverted,” into a new special. The special stars Fishback as Eden, an 18-year- old girl living in the inner city and depicts “the destruction of Black identity” as seen through her eyes. Fishback plays more than 20 characters in the show and will executive produce the project alongside Foxx and his producing partner Datari Turner.

In 2020 Fishback was seen starring in the superhero film “Project Power,” alongside Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Her sensational acting chops are additionally highlighted in the series “The Deuce,” opposite James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and in “The Hate U Give,” opposite Amandla Stenberg.

In January of 2018, Fishback was named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s Sundance Film Festival’s breakout stars for her critically praised performance in “Night Comes On” for director Jordana Spiro, which won the festival’s audience NEXT award.

In addition to acting, Fishback is a skilled spoken word poet and playwright. Her senior thesis at Pace University was a self-written, 90-minute one woman spoken word poetry performance titled “Subverted.” The production explored Black identity and existence in a system rooted in inequality from 20 different viewpoints and received praise from Gloria Steinem, David Simon and more. The play also garnered Fishback a New York Innovative Theatre Award nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance.
