Here’s the first look at Idris Elba and Naomie Harris as Nelson and Winnie Mandela in Justin Chadwick‘s Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

Based on a screenplay by Bill Nicholson (Sarafina!, Gladiator, Les Miserables), and directed by Justin Chadwick, the epic motion picture will celebrate Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his election as President of South Africa. It explores the Mandela unknown to most of the world – the lover of fast cars and women, the boxing enthusiast and playboy, the skilful lawyer and the gun-toting freedom fighter – an intimate portrait of the making of a modern icon.

Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) directed Harris in Singh’s 2010 drama The First Grader about a Kenyan villager and ex Mau Mau freedom fighter.

Harris will next appear opposite Daniel Craig in the James Bond film, Skyfall, while Elba (The Wire, Luther, Prometheus) will be reprising his role as Heimdall in Thor 2.

Pathé UK has distribution rights for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom in the UK and France.
