Amazon, via EW, has released the first images of Janelle Monáe, Stephan James, Joan Cusack, Hong Chau, and Chris Cooper in Season 2 of Homecoming. The series is based on the hit podcast of the same name.
The series’ sophomore run premieres on May 22.
Monáe succeeds Julia Roberts who toplined Season 1 in a one-year deal. Roberts is continuing as an executive producer on the series, a co-production between Amazon Studios and UCP.

Directed by Esmail and created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, Homecoming’s first season focused on Heidi Bergman (Roberts), a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Walter Cruz (James) is one of these soldiers, eager to begin the next phase of his life. Overseeing Heidi and the facility is Colin Belfast (Cannavale), an ambitious company man whose manic demands point to questionable motives. Despite the tight grip (and brain-altering drugs) of the center’s Homecoming Initiative and parent company Geist Group, Walter and Heidi escaped.

Monáe will play a military veteran named Jackie floating in a canoe, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Jackie’s search for her own identity leads her to Walter, whom Heidi tracked down and found enjoying a new small-town life at the end of season 1. According to Monáe: “We’re both searching for the truth. Geist is a name we realize has this significance to our path.”

Cooper will play the previous unseen Geist CEO Leonard Geist. EW also noted that Joan Cusack was also added to “the villain side of the world,” where she joins Audrey (Hong Chau), who has somehow skyrocketed up the Geist ranks; she was notably seen using the Homecoming drug in season 1’s post-credits scene.
Homecoming will return to Amazon later this year.
