Gabrielle Union has picked up the rights to broadcast journalist Anissa Gray’s debut novel The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls through her very own I’ll have Another Productions. The 2019 book will be developed into a series under Union’s production company’s first look production deal with Sony Pictures Television. Union has pegged writer and producer Erika L. Johnson to write the series who has already lent her talents to the likes of Shades of Blue and Queen Sugar. The two have worked together before on BET’s Being Mary Jane.
The story is centered on the Butler Family, a well respected staple in a small Michigan town where they reside. The eldest of three sisters has served as the substitute matriarch for her family, and has now been arrested for a white collar crime she committed with her husband, defaming the family’s name in the town. The book explores the relationships between mothers and daughters, identity and family, and how the relationships that sustain you can also be the ones that consume you.
Of the show, Union states, “One of my goals with starting my own production company was to be able to create work for people I know and respect, Erika is one of those creatives. Besides [the] fact that she’s beyond professional, she’s extraordinarily talented. We both really responded to a lot of the themes that this book uncovers mainly because they aren’t so openly discussed within black culture. We want to be able to open the door for those types of conversations to exist.” Union can be currently seen on the Spectrum Originals show, LA’S Finest.
