Last night, Blackfilm.com attended the World Premiere of the James Brown biopic, GET ON UP, at the Apollo Theater in New York City.

Directed by Tate Taylor, the film stars Chadwick Boseman as James Brown, Nelsan Ellis as Bobby Byrd, Dan Aykroyd as Ben Bart, Viola Davis as Susie Brown, Octavia Spencer as Aunt Honey, Jill Scott as Deidre “Dee-Dee” Jenkins, Tika Sumpter as Yvonne Fair, Craig Robinson as Maceo Parker, Lennie James as Joseph “Joe” James, Keith Robinson as Baby Roy, Aloe Blacc as Nafloyd Scott, Brandon Mychal Smith as Little Richard, Josh Hopkins as Ralph Bass, Tariq Trotter as Pee Wee Ellis, Aakomon Jones as Bobby Bennett,  Fred Melamed, and Aunjanue Ellis as Vicki Anderson

The film was produced by Brian Grazer, Mick Jagger, Tate Taylor, Victoria Pearman, and Erica Huggins.

The film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Davis plays Brown’s mother while Spencer his Aunt Honey. Robinson is Maceo Parker, a funk and soul saxophonist who played with Brown in the 1960s.Brown died in 2006.

With the exception of Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer,  and Aunjanue Ellis, the majority of the cast and crew were present.

Among the celebrities in attendance were Rev. Al Sharpton, Mad Men’s John Slattery, director Malcolm D. Lee, singer Lisa Fischer, singer Valerie Simpson, Martha Stewart, Donna Dixon,  DJ D-Nice, Legendary Damon, Tony Danza, Ron Perelman, Ron Meyer, Lucas Jagger, Luciana Gimenez, Tomi Rae Brown, James Brown II, James Brown’s second wife, Deidre ‘Deedee’ Jenkins, singer Luke James, and politician Charlie Rangel.

Following the screening, the afterparty was held in a elegant tent behind the theater. Along with food and drinks,  the partygoers were dancing, doing the Soul Train line, while Craig Robinson was on the mic singing and being the MC.

Get On Up hits theaters on August 1st.
