The Harlem based Hip Hop Film Festival (HHFF) returns for its fourth season, honoring the legacy and social impact of John Singleton and presenting stories from the culture from over 150 filmmakers from around the world in competition. The festival takes place from Thursday, August 1 to Sunday, August 4 at the National Black Theatre in Harlem, located at 2031 Fifth Avenue, NYC.
With over 150 filmmakers and 3,000 film enthusiasts coming into New York from all over the world, this four-day event creates a platform for stories from the culture. By screening the stories of hip hop culture, the traditional film categories of drama, sci-fi, action, thriller, and more are reshaped and redefined.
“The Hip Hop Film Festival is committed to empowering filmmakers and movie lovers that grew up in the universal culture of hip hop,” said HHFF founder CR Capers.
Past submissions and winners have generated great success for the festival. Out of hundreds of entries, Stefon Bristol’s “See You Yesterday” won the hearts and minds of judges and was picked up by SPIKE LEE & NETFLIX for the big screen. The festival awards the distinction of BEST of the FEST in over 21 categories including, Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Web Series and more. The festival and the featured filmmakers received worldwide press and many went on to be invited to other festivals, offered world tours and obtained distribution deals.
With the collaboration of the festival’s current partners, the HHFF will be able to offer support and resources to film fans all over the world. Through a partnership with BET, the winner of the festival’s DOPE WEB competition will receive a development meeting with the head of BET Digital programming. The winner of the documentary category will receive an acquisition meeting with REVOLT TV networks. In addition, through it’s ongoing collaboration with Final Draft, the HHFF will be able to promote new inclusivity tools found in scriptwriting programs in order to encourage depictions of diversity.
This year the festival’s prestigious G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) is awarded to John Singleton, with special events honoring the icon, began on July 19th 2019 with a Brooklyn block party powered by NYC Parks Dept. in Prospect Park called The Art of The Score, featuring live DJ’s and a movie under the stars. August 3rd, 2019 is The Black Gold Gala & Harlem Film House fundraiser powered by Black Gold Vape, which includes a high-end 5-course dinner curated by Chef Coupet and featuring entertainment inspired by the movies of Singleton at the festival’s 2 story art gallery housed at the National Black Theatre.
The festival will also be debuting on REVOLT Networks on June 21 to showcase the best talent that the HHFF has to offer with a takeover of the network’s top-rated program SHORT & FRESH.
