Jada Pinkett Smith 2Jada Pinkett Smith has been cast in their comic-inspired series “Gotham” as the gangster Fish Mooney, as announced by Warner Bros. Television and Fox.

An original character in the series, Mooney is described as follows: “A sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, Fish Mooney’s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she’s not one to be crossed.”

Based upon characters published by DC Comics, “Gotham” is a drama exploring the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous. Series regulars cast to date are Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth and Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin).

Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”) wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer on the series. Danny Cannon (“CSI,” “Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot which is expected to air this fall.

This is Pinkett Smith’s return to television since TNT cancelled her ‘Hawthorne’ series, which ran from 2009-2011. Prior to that, she played Lena James in NBC’s ‘A Different World’ from 1991-1993.
