Blackfilm.com correspondent Ellen J. Wanjiru chats with Jeffrey Wright and Jennifer Hudson about their roles in Netflix Original film ‘MONSTER,’ premiering Friday, May 7th, 2021. Albeit brief, one truly gets a sense [in the interview] of the effect the film had on both actors. Jeffrey Wright, Jennifer Hudson Talk ‘MONSTER’

Jeffrey Wright and Jennifer Hudson star as Mr. and Mrs. Harmon, the stable and well-to-do parents of Steve Harmon (Kelvin Harrison Jr) — a seventeen-year-old honor student whose world comes crashing down around him when he is charged with felony murder. The film follows his dramatic journey from a smart, likeable film student from Harlem attending an elite high school through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison.

What stood out most about Wright and Hudson’s characters was how they conveyed the unmitigated fear Black parents carry when it comes to raising their children and how they may be perceived by the outside world. It wasn’t melodramatic, nor was it overstated — it just existed.

MONSTER is a thought-provoking, creative, insightful and stunning depiction of identity, race, peer pressure, dehumanization, crime, teenaged masculinity, and the relative or subjective nature of the truth.
