When you think about the career of Keanu Reeves, most of his hit films came out of action films (Point Break, Speed, and The Matrix), and while it’s had it ups and downs, he keeps plugging hoping for another hit. Well, leave it for David Leitch, Chad Stahelski, two ex-stuntmen-turned-directors to bring Reeves an action film that, while very predictable, is fun, bloody and enjoyable. “John Wick” is a gory, exciting action thriller that would have made Charles Bronson proud.

Mourning the death of his wife, Reeves plays an ex-hitman John Wick to Russian mobsters and looking to be left alone with his dog, which was a posthumous gift sent to him by her. When a mobster’s son kills the dog, Wick’s killer mode is alive and kicking and won’t stop til he gets his revenge.

Everything from here on out is predictable, but the action is well paced and stylish and Reeves is having a joyride blasting folks left and right. With a supporting cast that includes Willem Dafoe as another contract killer, Michael Nyqvist as the Rusian gangster and Game of Thrones’ Alfie Allen as the son who set Wick on a warpath, “Wick” plays out like a shoot-’em-up video game where the action execution keeps you from turning your head. It’s a fun film that’s total escapism.
