Mara Brock Akil to Develop Scripted Series for Fox Entertainment

FOX Entertainment has entered into a network-direct script deal with writer and producer Mara Brock Akil (“Black Lightning,” “The Game,” “Being Mary Jane”). Under the agreement, Brock Akil will develop and write a scripted series for FOX to air on the network. FOX Entertainment would produce the project.

“Mara is a truly gifted writer, with a strong point of view. From ‘Girlfriends’ to ‘The Game’ to ‘Being Mary Jane,’ she’s a proven hitmaker with the unique ability to write both comedy and drama. Since the formation of FOX Entertainment, we’ve said we want to be in business with the best and the brightest, and no one exemplifies that more than Mara Brock Akil,” said Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment, FOX Entertainment.

Groundbreaking in many ways, Mara Brock Akil created the seminal series “Girlfriends” in 2000. The series was a witty, intelligent and honest exploration of the many facets of black womanhood. During its eight-season stint on air, it was one of the highest-rated scripted shows among African-Americans ages 18-34. Also, during that time, Akil developed the spin-off series “The Game,” which premiered in 2006 and quickly became a fan-favorite. In fact, loyal fans of “The Game” rallied behind the series upon its cancellation in what was then an unprecedented way, taking to social media to launch a campaign to save the series. Currently, a highly anticipated reboot of “The Game” is in the development at the CW. The new incarnation of the series is answering the call of the fans to make a comeback. In 2013, Akil developed her first one-hour drama, BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” further cementing her ability to tell powerful, and engaging stories that speak to women through honest, true-to-life reflections. Akil has continued that legacy and passion through her recent projects, including The CW’s “Black Lightning” and OWN’s “Love Is__.”
