Screen Rant is reporting that Netflix has renewed its latest series “The Umbrella Academy” for a second season.
In the first season, seven children born during an unexplained global phenomenon develop incredible powers and are adopted by an eccentric billionaire, who trains them to save the world. The six surviving siblings reunite years later after learning their father has died, only to find themselves fighting to stop the apocalypse.

According to the site, “The cliffhanger ending of The Umbrella Academy season 1 clearly left the story unfinished. The Umbrella Academy students had failed to prevent the apocalypse, with Vanya’s powers blasting a chunk out of the Moon and causing the extinction of the human race. Fortunately, Five was able to add a new variable by transporting them back in time – to who knows where or when. The dysfunctional family of superheroes are still determined to save the world, but they don’t really have a clue how to pull it off. What’s more, the sinister entity known as the Commission will still be determined to stop them.”

It also states that production is expected to be underway from May through to September ahead of an airing early next year.
The series is based on the comic book series of the same name created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. In addition, Steve Blackman will return as showrunner. The second season, which will consist of 10 episodes, will begin production this summer.

The cast set to reprise their roles include Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin Min. Additional casting news for season two will be announced at a later date. Mary J. Blige is not expected to return.
