The Tracking Board is reporting that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is in talks to play the lead on the third season of HBO’s True Detective.

While the third season hasn’t been greenlit by the cable network, Emmy Award winning writer David Milch, best known for creating and writing shows like NYPD Blue (co-created with Steven Bochco), Deadwood and Luck, is on board as a writer. Creator Nic Pizzolatto has written two episodes of True Detective season 3.

The first season of True Detective starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittle, with the second starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn. Season 2 didn’t have the same critical success that the first one, although it did well in the ratings department.

Ali won an Oscar for his soulful supporting performance in Moonlight, which also won Best Picture. Coming off a banner year that also included turns in House of Cards, Marvel‘s Luke Cage, Hidden Figures, Kicks and Free State of Jones, Ali recently wrapped Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel and he’ll soon be seen in the acclaimed Sundance film Roxanne Roxanne. Ali also just signed on to lend his voice to Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie.
