Deadline is reporting that Emmy winning actress Regina King has been added to the cast of Oscar winning director Barry Jenkins‘ next feature, the love story “If Beale Street Could Talk,” joining newcomer Kiki Layne, Stephan James and Teyonah Parris.

Production on the film is expected to start in October.

Based on the novel by James Baldwin, “If Beale Street Could Talk,” follows Tish (Layne), a newly engaged Harlem woman who races against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence while carrying their first born child. The movie is a celebration of love told through the story of a young couple, their families, and their lives.

James will play Fonny, Tish’s fiance, while Parris will play Tish’s streetwise sister, Ernestine, who is determined to help her future brother-in-law prove his innocence.

The movie will mark Jenkins’ first production with Annapurna and a reunion of “Moonlight’s” producing team with PASTEL and Plan B.  “Moonlight” won this year’s best picture Oscar.

King just finished a three year rin on John Ridley’s anthology American Crime for ABC which garnered her three Emmy Award nominations and two wins. King previously inked a two-year pact for her and sister Reina King’s production company Royal Ties with ABC Studios.

King is also a director, having most recently helmed upcoming episodes of NBC’s hit This is Us and Showtime’s critically acclaimed Shameless. Her past directing credits include TNT’s Animal Kingdom and episodes of ShondaLand’s Scandal.
