Rewind with Ellen hosts Ellen J. Wanjiru and Rougét Carter chat with director Winter Dunn (Jezebel, Junebug) and Tony award actress and activist Mikayla Lashae Bartholomew (King Richard, Pure) about short film ‘DEAR MAMA,’ which explores the struggle of a widowed husband/dad unable to come to terms with the death of his wife and a young, artistic rap fan, trying to hold onto the last pieces of her mother through Tupac’s music and her mother’s camera – both a lifeline when she feels most lost. Through the lens of hip hop’s cultural impact and an intimate focus on Black family dynamics at work through compounded calamity, Tanisha (Bartholomew) and Nate (Garland Scott) are forced to confront the ways they’ve been hurting each other, before taking the first steps to heal.
Produced by a group of Film Independent’s 2021 Project Involve fellows, the short film is women-led, helmed by a majority BIPOC cast and crew, almost entirely comprised of women. Dunn directed and developed the short alongside writer Charmaine Cleveland and producers Nicole Mairose Dizon and Xin Li, and was awarded the 2021 Amazon Studios Film Fellowship for her directorial work on the project, including a $10K grant. Producer Xin Li was also awarded the Los Angeles Media Fund Fellowship for her work on the film.
