Deadline is reporting that actress Sanaa Lathan has joined the cast of A24’s adaptation of Richard Wright‘s acclaimed novel, Native Son,’ with Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders taking on the iconic role of Bigger Thomas.

Lathan will play Trudy Thomas, a widow who is doing her best to raise three children in a small and cramped but tidy Chicago apartment. When her new boyfriend helps arrange a job interview for her eldest son Bigger (Sanders) to work as a chauffeur for local real estate magnate, a chain of events is triggered that will have devastating consequences for both families.

Rashid Johnson will direct the film from a screenplay written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks.

The film, which will take place in the present day in Johnson’s hometown of Chicago. and Margaret Qualley (Novitiate, The Nice Guys), Nick Robinson (Love, Simon, Jurassic World), KiKi Layne (Barry Jenkins’ upcoming If Beale Street Could Talk) and Bill Camp (The Night Of) are also set. Matthew Libatique (Black Swan, Straight Outta Compton) will be the director of photography.

The film was developed and will be produced by Bow and Arrow Entertainment’s Matthew Pernicaro and Michael Sherman, coming off of Skate Kitchen and Madeline’s Madeline, which both just premiered at Sundance. Production begins April 9.

Lathan, whose recent credits include CBS Films’ American Assassin and Fox’s Shots Fired, is next up in the Netflix original film Nappily Ever After and has a recurring role on Season 4 of Showtime’s The Affair.
