While having a panel conversation with director Malcolm D. Lee at the American Black Film Festival last week about her career in film and TV, actress Sanaa Lathan revealed to the audience that she will be voicing the Catwoman character for the forthcoming Harley Quinn animated series on DC Universe’s streaming service.
Premiere in October 2019 and described as an adult animated action-comedy, the series follows Harley as she breaks things off with the Joker and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal “queenpin” of Gotham City. The series will also feature Poison Ivy, Batman and a cast of heroes and villains — old and new — from the DC universe.

The voice cast also includes Lake Bell (Wet Hot American Summer) as Dr. Pamela Isley/ Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as The Joker, Ron Funches (Powerless), JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Wanda Sykes (Black-ish), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Natalie Morales (Bojack Horseman), Jim Rash (Community), Rahul Kohli (iZombie) as Dr. Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow, Diedrich Bader (Veep) as Bruce Wayne/ Batman, Tony Hale (Veep) as Dr. Edgar Cizko / Doctor Psycho and Chris Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) as Commissioner Gordon. Details about which characters the rest of the cast will voice were not immediately available.
Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey are behind the show, which is based on characters from the DC Comics universe. The trio were behind last year’s NBC short-lived DC superhero comedy, Powerless, With the Harley Quinn casting, Halpern, Schumacker and Lorey reunite with Powerless stars Tudyk and Funches.
Lathan is no stranger to the animation world. She previously voiced the character Donna Tubbs on Fox’s The Cleveland Show for four seasons as well as appear on its flagship series Family Guy (on a recurring basis). She was last seen in the “Replay” episode of the The Twilight Zone on CBS All-Access and will come back for the final season on Showtime’s The Affair. Earlier this year, Lathan appeared in HBO’s Native Son.
The subscription service provides a mix of scripted originals as well as access to DC-themed TV, film and comic books.
