According to Page Six of the New York Post, Sean Combs is looking to do a remake of Abel Ferrara‘s cult classic gangster film, ‘King of New York.’
Combs has recently teamed with Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer to do an update on the 1990 film, which starred Christopher Walken, Laurence Fishburne, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, Victor Argo, and Giancarlo Esposito. The media mogul may also have a starring role in the new version.
The film centered on a former drug lord who returns from prison to wipe out his competition and distribute the profits of his lucrative operation to help the poor by building a public hospital in a ghetto neighborhood.
Grazer has told Page Six, “Sean optioned the rights to remake ‘King of New York’ for two years. The film is a cult classic, and it will be great to remake it. Our version won’t be exactly the same, but will have the same hard-core gangster feel. Sean wants to be in it, he was amazing in ‘Monster’s Ball,’ and such strong characters sit perfectly with him.”
While the original was never a box office hit, only grossing a little over two million dollars, it became of one of Ferrara’s best films besides Bad Lieutenant.
In 2005, Combs starred in ‘Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power,’ the prequel to Brian De Palma’s 1993 film, ‘Carlito’s Way.’ His last big screen role was opposite Jonah Hill in 2010’s ‘Get Him to the Greek.’
