“Short Term 12” star Keith Stanfield has booked his next film, a role in Universal’s “The Purge 2,” reports TheWrap.
With James DeMonaco returning to write, direct and produce the sequel, Stanfield joins a cast that includes Frank Grillo (“Warrior”), Michael K. Williams (“Boardwalk Empire”), Carmen Ejogo (“Sparkle”), Zach Gilford (“Friday Night Lights”), Kiele Sanchez (“Lost”) and Zoe Soul (“Prisoners”).
Plot details for the sequel haven’t been revealed, but the original film was set in a world where the government allows a 12-hour period once a year where all crime is legal.
The first film, which starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, has earned $90 million worldwide to date on a $3 million budget.
Stanfield is in contention for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor in his film debut as Marcus, one of the kids at the foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers in Destin Daniel Cretton‘s Short Term 12. His song “So You Know What It’s Like,” which he co-wrote with Cretton, could also get an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
The Purge 2 is slated to hit theaters on June 20th, 2014.
