Sony’s TriStar Pictures has won the auction rights to the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody. The film will follow the life and work of the legendary music icon and actress. The studio is already planning for a release date of Thanksgiving 2022 as reported by Deadline.
The project will be directed by Stella Meghie known for The Photographer starring Issa Rae. Also onboard is screenwriter Anthony McCarten who self-financed a life rights option and has lined up rights and music for the production.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody will be produced by Pat Houston on behalf of the family estate, Davis Larry Mestel for Primary Wave Music, Dennis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri for Compelling Pictures and Anthony McCarten for Fire Productions.
It is still unknown who will portray Houston on screen.
