‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Season 2 Gets Release Date and First Look Images From HBO

Today, HBO unveiled first look images of the much-anticipated second season of the hit comedy series The Righteous Gemstones.

Created, written and executive produced by Danny McBride (HBO’s Vice Principals and Eastbound & Down), and marking his third HBO comedy series from Rough House Pictures, the nine-episode second season will debut on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max this winter.

The Righteous Gemstones tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work. Season two finds our blessed Gemstone family threatened by outsiders from both the past and present who wish to destroy their empire.

The series stars Danny McBride, John Goodman, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, Tim Baltz, Walton Goggins and new recurring stars Jason Schwartzman, Eric Andre and Jessica Lowe. Season two also stars Skyler Gisondo and Gregory Alan Williams, in addition to new recurring cast member Eric Roberts.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McBride speaks on production delays cause by the Covid-19 pandemic, leading him to re-write the entire second season. To the outlet McBride commented:

“Yeah, we had written the whole season, because we started writing when we were in post on the first season and had written all through the holidays, into the beginning of the new year. So the season was finished, we were ready to go, and then once COVID came I was just benched and sitting on my ass in my house for several months, so it was impossible to not open those scripts back up again. And then the moment I did I basically rewrote the entire season. So you have not had Gemstones, but I’ve had more than enough f‑‑‑ing Gemstones.”

The Righteous Gemstones is created and written by Danny McBride; directed and executive produced by Danny McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green; executive produced by John Carcieri, Jeff Fradley and Brandon James; co-executive produced by Jonathan Watson; produced by David Brightbill; consulting produced by Grant Dekernion, Kevin Barnett, Edi Patterson and Chris Pappas.
