Today A24 released the trailer for Joel Coen’s (Fargo, No Country for Old Men) highly anticipated adaptation – The Tragedy of Macbeth. written and directed by Coen, the film is headed by heavy hitters Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. The project is set for a theatrical release on Christmas with a digital debut January 14 on Apple TV+.
The Tragedy of Macbeth is Coen’s bold and fierce adaptation; a tale of murder, madness, ambition, and wrathful cunning. Set in black and white Washington and McDormand play Lord and Lady Macbeth – Shakespear’s most infamous couple. The trailer is released just days before the films world premier at the 59th New York Film Festival on September 24.
Also starring are Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster), Alex Hassell (The Miniaturist),
Corey Hawkins (Straight Out of Compton), Harry Melling (The Queen’s Gambit), Brendan Gleeson (Mr. Mercedes), Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), and Kathryn Hunter (A Midsummer’s Night Dream).
Usually associated as a team with his brother Ethan Coen as the Coen Brothers, Macbeth marks Joel’s first solo venture, after it being hinted that Ethan is leaving film to pursue other outlets.
McDormand is fresh off an Oscar win for her role in Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland and is sure to secure some nods for her portrayal of lady Macbeth. Washington recently starred in the crime thriller, The Little Things, holding audiences over for the anticipated release of A Journal for Jordan, directed and starring Washington alongside Michael B. Jordan.
