Last night, Blackfilm.com attended the 18th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival, where Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Beyond The Lights was the opening night film.
Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the lead role, the film also features Nate Parker, Danny Glover, Minnie Driver, Aisha Hinds, Aml Ameen, and rapper Machine Gun Kelly, making his film debut.
Beyond The Lights is the story of Noni Jean, a hot new artist who has just won a Grammy and is primed for stardom. But the pressures of success compel her to nearly end her life until she is saved by a young police officer. They fall hard for each other, despite the protests of their parents who want each to focus on their own career ambitions. But he might be the missing piece to unlock her artistic potential.
In attendance were director Gina Prince-Bythewood, actors Nate Parker and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, along with producers Stephanie Allain, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Matt Alvarez , NBA player Amar’e Stoudemire, and editor Terilyn A. Shropshire.
Also attending the premiere were cast members of Starz’s Power (Naturi Naughton, La La Anthony, Sinqua Walls and Rotimi), boxer Terrence Crawford, Jessica Pimentel (Orange is the New Black), Saycon Sengbloh (Fela!, Motown, The Good Wife), Lisa Arrindell Anderson (Christmas Wedding Baby, Drumline 2), Colman Domingo (Selma), Andre Holland (The Knick, Selma), Gbenga Akkinagbe (24: Live Another Day), Brittany Perry-Russell, Issa Rae, Richard Brooks (Being Mary Jane), Hisham Tawfiq (The Black List), and Taimak (The Last Dragon).
After the screening, Best Man Holiday director Malcolm D. Lee moderated a panel discussion with the cast and crew.
Beyond The Lights hits theaters on November 14, 2014
