Variety is reporting that Award Award nominee and Emmy winner Viola Davis is attached to star in Steve McQueen’s latest film, “Widows.”
Produced by New Regency, the heist thriller will be written by “Gone Girl” screenwriter and novelist Gillian Flynn.
Based on the 2002 British miniseries Widows that was written by Prime Suspect‘s Lynda La Plante, the film is about four armed robbers who get killed in a botched heist attempt and their widows teaming up to finish the job.
Film 4 will co-finance the film with New Regency and it will license free TV rights in the UK. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films will produce the film with McQueen.
The movie marks McQueen’s first feature since winning the best picture Academy Award for “12 Years a Slave.” McQueen has since been working on the HBO limited series “Codes of Conduct.”
Davis, star of ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder,” will next be seen opposite Denzel Washington in Paramount Pictures’ “Fences,” which hits theaters in December. Earlier this year, she appeared as Amanda Waller in Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad,” and had a starring role in the indie film “Custody,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. That film has yet to be picked up for distribution.
