The Night Of and Venom star Riz Ahmed is making yet another impressive performance as a musician with life altering health issues in Mogul Mowgli. Film Forum presents Bassam Tariq’s narrative feature debut which is receiving its U.S. theatrical premiere beginning Friday, September 3.
Mogul Mowgli is a bold, vital and electrifying exploration of heritage and identity. Coming off his historic Academy Award Best Actor nomination for Sound of Metal, Ahmed stars as Zed, a British Pakistani rapper on the cusp of his first world tour. But, struck down by an illness that threatens to derail his big break, he’s forced to confront his past, his family and the uncertainty of his legacy.
Mogul Mowgli was nominated for Best British Film at the 2021 BAFTA and received six 2020 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) nominations, with Ahmed winning Best Debut Screenwriter. Ahmed won the 41st London Critics’ Circle Film Award for British/Irish Actor of the Year (for body of work) for performances including Zed in Mogul Mowgli.
“Ahmed tears into it with even more wild-eyed magnetism [than in SOUND OF METAL]. (A) seething, spitting, can’t-look-away performance. It’s the fruit of a palpably close collaboration with American-Pakistani docmaker Bassam Tariq, who brings restive visual and sonic verve to his first narrative feature. Tariq steers proceedings into stranger, headier realms of Zed’s subconscious. The oily tones of Annika Summerson’s claustrophobic lensing and the layered, head-buzzing cacophony of Paul Davies’s superb sound design are invaluable allies to Tariq’s direction. Ahmed affirms his standing as one of Britain’s most vital, risky actors.”
