If it’s your dream to sit your non-black friends down and corner them into saying all the racist things you know they’ve thought before – Showtime’s latest addition – Ziwe – may be everything you’ve been waiting for. Named after comedian and show host, Ziwe Fumudo, the show looks to bring her brand of comedy in a perfectly packed ultra-girly, slightly uncomfortable, highly fashionable and truly funny late-night variety show. The interviews on Ziwe are unique to say the least. She grills guests on a wonderfully ultra femme set decked out with shades of pink, fuzzy chairs, and of course, pictures of herself; asking them questions that are meant to make them squirm uncomfortably while side eye their PR person as if to say “You’re trying to get me canceled aren’t you?” In addition to interviews, the show will feature musical numbers, guest stars, sketches and more – including unscripted and unpredictable interactions with everyday people. It’s giving Desus & Mero (the Showtime version) but for the femme, non-binary, lgbtq+ set and everything in between.
Ziwe – a writer, comedian and performer – will also serve as showrunner on the series. Although she’s most noted for writing for Showtime’s popular late-night show Desus & Mero, Ziwe began her career at Comedy Central, working for The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. She is also credited as a writer on comedian (and now fellow sketch show host) Robin Thede’s The Rundown with Robin Thede. Other writing credits include Our Cartoon President and Dickinson. Ziwe rose to viral popularity with her ground-breaking and provocative Youtube series, Baited, where she sits down friends and comedic colleagues for an interview with questions about race, ultimately baiting them for problematic sound bites that could make them look racist. She has also voiced Kamala Harris and other roles for Our Cartoon President, as well as Tooning Out the News, and appears in her own Pop Show, which she created and performs at Brooklyn’s Union Hall with original pop songs off her album Generation Ziwe.
Even more fitting is that Ziwe comes from popular production house known for specialized and artistic content – A24. In addition to Ziwe, Jamund Washington and Hunter Speese serve as executive producers. Ziwe will premiere on Showtime on Sunday, May 9 at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
