British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw has landed the lead role in the new Apple TV+ series Surface. The psychological thriller comes from the mind of Veronica West, co-creator and executive producer for the Hulu series High Fidelity. West, who created and penned the eight-part series, has also lent her writing talents to GCB, Brothers and Sisters, and State of Affairs. Producing the show are Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Apple TV+. Mbatha-Raw will be teaming up once again with her The Morning Show cast mate, Witherspoon, to co-executive produce the series. West will join Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine as executive producer. No further details have been released about the project.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw has a long list of credits to her name, with her breakout role in Amma Asante’s film Belle. The actress has gone on to star in 2014’s Beyond the Lights opposite Nate Parker, 2015’s Concussion with Will Smith, and in 2018’s Fast Color. She can currently be seen in the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show and in Misbehavior opposite Keira Knightly. She is also set to star in the Disney+ film Loki.
