The Oscars 2021 ceremony went where no awards show has gone in the past year — and who better to lead this optimistic effort than the organization regarded as the most prestigious awards in the entertainment industry around the world! Oscars 2021 List of Black Winners, Upsets & Funniest Moment
This year’s show was an in-person event broadcast from Los Angeles, with an untraditional red carpet that took the necessary social distancing and COVID-19 precautions. Granted, it was a bit strange to watch some of our favorite celebrities walk up to get their press photos taken in glamorous ball gowns and dapper tuxedos while donning matching masks (some even forgot to take them off and had to be reminded), but it was reassuring to see that it is possible to pull of what seemed like a Herculean undertaking. Oscars 2021 served as a great example of how we as a country are slowly and hopefully getting back to “normal.”

OSCAR 2021 UPSETS
Now that we celebrated the best of the best, there were still many of us whose hearts fell to the floor when Andra Day was not announced as Best Actress. It’s easy to say that Day is a newcomer, and think “next time” but not to sound pessimistic — will there be a next time? Her life-like performance struck many as an out-of-body experience where we witnessed two artists and two Lady Day’s merge as one. Billie spoke through Andra. Audra spoke to us. We were allowed to go back in time (not long ago) and feel the history of “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.”
Additional palpable upsets that had many social media users dazed and outraged included Viola Davis for best actress and of course the late Chadwick Boseman who seemed likely a shoe-in for Best Actor, which would have been well-deserved given his phenomenal performance in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.’
OSCARS 2021 – FUNNIEST MOMENT
On a humorous note, nothing was more endearing than Glenn Close playing ‘name that song’ with Questlove and Lil Rel Howery. Not only was it jaw-dropping when she earned “instant cred.” after naming Da Butt and shouting out Spike Lee, School Daze, Go-Go music, Experience Unlimited (E.U.) and the DMV all in one response, but she also got up on live TV to show us how “Da Butt” is done. Priceless!
