Will Packer, Malcolm D. Lee Teaming Up For Comedy Film ‘Girls Trip’Posted by Wilson Morales

With a gross $120+ million at the box office so far, Ride Along producer Will Packer’s (Ride Along, Think Like A Man) next film with Universal Pictures, via his Will Packer Productions banner, will be the comedy, Girls Trip; with Best Man’s Holiday Malcolm D. Lee set to direct. Production is expected to begin this summer.
Lee recently directed the hit dramedy The Best Man Holiday for Universal. The sequel, which came out more than a decade after The Best Man (which Lee also directed), opened in mid-November to a $30.1 million debut. It has grossed over $71 million to date. Packer is repped by UTA and Matt Johnson of Ziffren Brittenham. Lee is repped by Resolution Agency’s Adam Kanter and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano’s Gordon Bobb.
Ride Along opened to a record $48.6M over the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend this year. Sony then scheduled Packer’s The Wedding Ringer, which he is producing with Adam Fields for the MLK holiday in 2015. Written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, the film is comedy starring Kevin Hart again and Josh Gad. Packer also produced Think Like a Man, which grossed $96M worldwide, and its upcoming sequel, Think Like a Man Too.
Packer and his Ride Along director Tim Story are also planning a sequel to their hit comedy. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart recently closed a deal to reprise their roles as the quick-witted security guard (Hart) who has his eye on his partner’s (Cube’s) sister.
Under Universal Pictures, Lee has directed The Best Man, Undercover Brother, and The Best Man Holiday for the studio. With the success of the latter, a third film in the franchise is in the works.
