Following its surprising take of $30.5M at the box office for ‘The Best Man Holiday,’ Universal Pictures and Malcolm D. Lee are in talks for him to write, direct and produce another installment of the hit ensemble romantic comedy.
Deadline reports that Sean Daniel is also in talks to come back and produce another film through his The Sean Daniel Company shingle. Spike Lee and his 40 Acres and a Mule company produced the first film, The Best Man, back in 1999.
It took nearly 15 years for Universal to greenlit a sequel to the film that many consider an urban classic. With the whole gang (Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa De Sousa) back, fans showed their appreciation by defying box office experts, who had predicted that the film would only make less than $20M.
According to the site, none of the original cast are signed to do a third film, and if ‘Holiday’ continues to do well financially, each should expect a big pay day. Made for $17M, it’s assumed that the cast took a pay cut to do the reunion film.
After nearly 15 years apart, Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa De Sousa reprise their career-launching roles in The Best Man Holiday, the long-awaited next chapter to the film that ushered in a new era of comedy. When the college friends finally reunite over the Christmas holidays, they will discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and romances to be ignited.
