For an avid film watcher, having direct access to the American Black Festival (ABFF) from the comfort of my home, has been priceless. Sure, it doesn’t beat being in Miami, but it’s the next best thing during a pandemic. This year’s #ABFF2020 event, which is dedicated to recognizing black talent and showcasing quality film and television content by and about people of African descent, was held virtually in response to the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its disproportionate impact on communities of color.
Creators/producers Jeff and Nicole Friday could’ve easily postponed the festival until next year, but instead they created an alternative outlet by launching ABFF Play, a streaming service and digital movie theater platform that showcases Black and Brown content, culture and creativity. The show must go on!
“Our goal is to create an alternative distribution outlet that will empower independent film filmmakers, artists and live event producers by giving them the opportunity to monetize their projects in a virtual environment,” said Jeff Friday, CEO, Streamland USA, LLC.
It doesn’t get any better than 10 days, 90 films, 25 panels, virtual parties & more! And speaking of parties, The Legendary White Party on Friday night (Co-sponsored by UMC and Moet Hennessy) with music by DJ Kiss & M.O.S. was one for the books. Despite getting Zoombombed several times, the music was epic, the dance moves were questionable yet fun to watch, there were celebrity drop-ins, MC Lyte announced the winner of the Partners in Rhyme National Casting Call, and the party didn’t stop until almost 1:00am!
You can still register for a Community Pass and get FREE access to a wide selection of narratives, shorts, documentaries and web series from August 21-30, over 30 celebrity conversations, panels discussions and business of entertainment seminars, and opening and closing night virtual parties.
