‘Black Film Space’ Platform Helps Black Filmmakers & Creatives Level Up in Hollywood

Black Film Space (BFS), a nonprofit professional development and networking resource organization recently launched a new membership platform to advance opportunities for Black filmmakers and expand representation in front and behind the camera. The two Black Film Space membership plans offer access to the collective’s platform of industry resources, discounts on tools and film festival submission rates, 75+ workshops, and on-demand courses led by accredited TV/film professionals, valued at over $2,000.

The platform also gives content creators prime access to apply for grants for up to $3,000, screenwriting accountability groups, member-only events, a mentorship program, a filmmaker directory and much more to help advance career opportunities for Black filmmakers and diversify representation in Hollywood. Current pricing for silver and gold membership is $85 / $125 and starting January 1st, the annual silver and gold membership will be $100 / $150.

BFS Co-founders screenwriter/producer/director Lande Yoosuf and screenwriter/director Reggie Williams announced the membership program as part of the organization’s commitment to supporting Black creatives with skill-enhancing tools, industry insights and resources to sustain a career in an industry that often lacks opportunities for BIPOCs. “Since we launched Black Film Space, we’ve become more clear on the needs of our collective,” cofounder Lande Yoosuf (Privilege Unhinged, Second Generation Wedding, Love in Submission ) reflects. “As filmmakers in an inclusion-challenged industry, we know first hand that Black filmmakers can feel frustrated, marginalized and stifled, so we work to be a resource for skill enhancement and community support to help Black creatives bring a variety of Black stories to screen and thrive in their careers.”

Since 2015, the collective of Black creatives has grown from 5,000 to over 10,000 strong, noting a surge of emerging filmmakers connecting with BFS’ virtual programming over the past year due to the impact of covid-19. Through the membership plan, Black content creators will have expanded benefits through the organization’s strategic partnerships with media giants, like ABFF, HBO and Ava Duvernay’s ARRAY, community and multitude of programs with Hollywood heavyweights, such as writer/director, Shaka King; director/editor Sam Pollard; writer/director Nijla Mumin; writer/director/producer Radha Blank; actor Adepero Oduye and countless others.
