‘AuntyLand Film Festival’ To Debut on International Women’s Day | Lineup Announced

AuntyLand Film Festival (ALFF) has announced the lineup for their inaugural event set for March 8-31 in honor of Women’s History Month. The slate includes 19 narrative short films, with interactive, live filmmaker talkback Q&A sessions on March 8, International Women’s Day, a global day to recognize women’s labor and contributions.

“We’re here to affirm. We are the only women and BIPOC film festival that centers mature women, 50 and older,” said Sylvia Wong Lewis, festival founder and director, who became a filmmaker at 60 after decades of working as a journalist.

The festival shines a light on independent, short films — 20 minutes or less — from women and BIPOC filmmakers, some seasoned directors and some first-timers. Most of the films have an intersectional flavor, defying categorization so the festival is presented in three film blocks. Block 1 is Arts, Society & Experimental; Block 2 is Romance, Culture & Comedy; and Block 3 is Global, Environment & Activism.

The full ALFF lineup will be available on Vimeo, 24/7 for the 24-day festival. Run time for each film block and its corresponding live filmmaker talkback Q&A session is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Portions of the program will be available on the festival’s YouTube Channel.

“Audience members are urged to sign up for online tickets, watch every film, stay for the filmmaker talkback Q&A sessions, spread the word and vote, too! We want the filmmakers’ amazing work to receive as much love and exposure as possible,” said Lewis.

The moderators for the filmmaker talkback Q&A sessions are award-winning filmmakers O.Funmilayo Makarah and Shannon Joy Shird. The curators/judges are filmmakers and multimedia creatives Louise FlemingYoko Lytle and Marjorie Clarke.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 festival is totally virtual with free admission to all events, but Lewis hopes that next year’s festival will be in-person.
