Ava Duvernay Gets Put Pilot for ‘Sovereign’ at NBC

Sovereign is the Native American family drama from award winning director Ava Duvernay and Bird Runningwater. Landing at NBC as a put pilot, it’s the first of its kind to be developed for network television.

The story follows the lives, loves and loyalties of a sprawling Indigenous family struggling to control the future of their tribe against outside forces and themselves. The story, by Duvernay, is being written for television by Sydney Freeland (Drunktown’s Finest) and Shaz Bennett (Bosch).

Duvernay is executive producing the project through her very own ARRAY Filmworks alongside Warner Bros. Television. Both Freeland and Bennet will be executive producing for the project as well. Serving as co-executive producers will be ARRAY’S own Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes along with Runningwater.

Duvernay is executive producing quite a collection of work through her overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. The director is offering Cherish the Day and the fifth season of family drama Queen Sugar – both on the OWN Network . She has two upcoming projects from Warner Unscripted TV; family social experiment Home Sweet Home on NBC and HBO Max docuseries One Perfect Shot. From WBGTV, Duvernay is gearing up the limited Netflix docuseries Colin in Black & White, based on athlete/activist Colin Kaepernick. The director helms a colorful body of award winning work including the documentary 13th, When They See Us, and her feature film Selma amongst others.
