It highlighted the series’ stunning cinematography and gripping storytelling that Jenkins’ is best known. The presence of the deep south, set against swaying willow trees at sunrise, our first vision is of a young woman brave and alone. Based on author Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning novel, the 10-episode series focuses on a slave named Cora Randall who, following her escape from a Georgia plantation, journeys out of the Antebellum South via the rumored “Underground Railroad.” Along the way, she is pursued by a bounty hunter harboring a grudge, as the only slave ever to evade him was Cora’s mother. As she travels from state to state, Cora contends with the legacy of the mother who left her behind and her own struggles to realize a life she never thought was possible.
