A Star-Studded Cast Taking Shape

The principal cast, announced in January, included Thuso Mbedu (The Woman King) as Zélie, a young woman determined to restore magic to her people, Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) as Amari, the rebellious daughter of the king who allies with Zélie. Damson Idris (Snowfall) takes on the role of Inan, the conflicted prince, while Tosin Cole (Supacell) plays Tzain, Zélie’s protective older brother.

Viola Davis (The Woman King, G20) will portray Mama Agba, the wise mentor figure. Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) joins as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba (Hobbs & Shaw) as the ruthless warrior Lekan, Lashana Lynch (Bob Marley: One Love) as Jumoke, and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as King Saran, the antagonist responsible for erasing magic from Orïsha.

New Additions to the Cast

The film’s ensemble has now been rounded out with the addition of Saniyya Sidney (Fences), Zackary Momoh (Harriet), Richard Mofe-Damijo (Namaste Wahala), rising Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, Pamilerin Ayodeji (Mikolo), Shamz Garuba (Crime and Justice Lagos), Kola Bodunde (Shadow), and Temi Fagbenle.

A Record-Breaking Acquisition

The rights to Children of Blood and Bone were acquired by Paramount Pictures in a record-breaking deal reported to be worth over $7 million, marking one of the highest prices ever paid for film rights to a YA novel. The acquisition reflects Hollywood’s growing interest in diverse, culturally rich stories that have the potential to become major franchises similar to YA novels like The Hunger Games.

A Powerful Story Rooted in African Mythology

Based on Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 novel, Children of Blood and Bone is set in the fictional kingdom of Orïsha, where magic was violently stripped away by the ruling monarchy. Zélie, haunted by the memory of her mother’s death at the hands of the king’s forces, embarks on a dangerous quest to reclaim magic and restore balance to her people. The story explores themes of oppression, resilience, and the power of unity, drawing inspiration from West African mythology and history.

A Film Poised to Make History

With Gina Prince-Bythewood at the helm and Aisha Coley (Queen Sugar, The Woman King) leading casting, Children of Blood and Bone is positioned to make a major impact on both the box office and the cultural landscape. The film is currently in pre-production, with a release date expected to be announced soon. With casting directors soon being eligible for Academy Awards, this project seems fitting to make history in a major way.
